Based on her experiences as a rape victim and a trained counselor, the author discusses the psychological impact of rape on the victim, particularly upon self concept and relationships, the interaction of the victim with criminal justice professionals and operations, victim services, and rape prevention steps.
Abstract
The Author's rape experience is detailed, with attention given to the thoughts and feelings associated with the attack and her interactions with others in the aftermath of the rape. Reactions and behavior from friends, family, medical personnel, and criminal justice professionals which were both helpful and detrimental to her are discussed. The empathetic, nonjudgmental, nonstereotyped response to her victimization and its deep pyschological effects was the most helpful, while superficial, light-hearted, and stereotyped views of the rape victim's experiences were the most painful. Although the author did not have to testify at a trial (the offender was never caught), she discusses her thoughts and feelings at the prospect of testifying and recounts the experiences of other rape victims she has known who have testified at the trial of the person charged. Suggestions for victim services are offered, with a chapter devoted to victim counseling. Twenty-one references, 10 annotated bibliographic listings of books and magazines, and 26 regular bibliographic listings are provided.
