An Australian survey of 600 police officers' opinions as to what should be appropriate material for a preservice police training course is presented.
Abstract
In order to design an improved preservice training program, a survey of the actual duties performed by junior police officers with less than 2 years of service was conducted. A total of 153 diaries were issued to trainees on the last day of training. Ninety-seven were returned and analyzed. In addition, officers returning to the police academy at 6 months of service were questioned on their reactions to their preservice courses. Additional data were gathered from 256 officers in charge of stations, police specialist sections, and training officers. The combination of questionnaires, structured interviews, and discussion yielded input from over 600 serving police officers of all ranks. Based on these data, a proposed police training model was devised. The model recognizes the importance of human relations and social skills training. The program is designed to mesh with inservice training.
