The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) supports local initiatives to reduce the incidence of drunk driving. The first article details the NHTSA approach. The second article outlines two Florida city's driving while intoxicated (DWI) countermeasures including special training, patrols at high priority locations, and roadside sobriety tests. The California Highway Patrol's antidrunk driving campaign is described in another article. Three articles examine the merits of sobriety checkpoint, while techniques for testing the impaired driver are addressed in another article. New York State's stop-DWI program is described. Other DWI countermeasures that are addressed include alcohol selective traffic enforcement planning; an antidrunk driving program in Dallas Tex.; and Operation CARE (Combined Accident Reduction Effort). Operation CARE is the only national program designed to draw all State-level law enforcement agencies together to achieve the common goal of traffic accident reduction. Emergency response issues are examined in a different series of articles. Topics include emergency command and control systems, response to radioactive materials highway accidents, hazardous waste programs, police pursuit driving, and the legal consequences of police failure to wear seat belts.
