Workshop participants included three probation officers, a police officer, a psychologist, and officer in charge of volunteers, and a halfway house administrator. The group agreed the heavy workload of probation officers could be alleviated by individualized treatment, cooperation between corrections and the schools, a general agency-based approach as found in Singapore, and supervision by mail in the case of some short-term probation supervisions. Additional ways to decrease probation officers' workloads are use of marginal interviews and extensive use of volunteers. The use of volunteers is economical and promotes public awareness and understanding. Preventive measures and public education are essential. Paper topics covered everyday problems of probation officers, halfway houses, community probation service, evaluation of parole supervision, characteristics of female murderers in Japan, group work in probationary supervision, and group treatment of traffic offenders.
