This workshop discussion on probation and prosecution focused on the effects of cultural diversity on criminal justice systems in Nepal, Thailand, Japan, Iraq, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines.
Abstract
Four group members worked in probation, two in prosecution, and one in police and prison work. Papers examined the problems of prison administration in Nepal, investigation and supervision of Philippine adult probationers, adult probation enforcement in Thailand, subbranch probation offices in Japan, the criminal system and public prosecutors in Iraq, and the status of probation in Sri Lanka. Finally, crimes committed by mentally disordered persons in Japan were discussed. Crime is seen as the result of interrelated factors and is not caused mainly by financial constraints. Community-based corrections appear to be not only cost-effective, but also a means of generating public awareness and support of the essential and needed rehabilitative nature of a society's corrections system.
