This guide assists Louisiana's DWI (driving while intoxicated) programs to deal effectively with court-referred, DWI-charged, or adjudicated clients and helps assure uniformity of program services.
Abstract
Screening guidelines help staff quickly sort offenders into drinking types for programming purposes. Education guidelines distinguish between program needs for problem and non-problem drinkers. For example, the practice of operating separate programs for first and multi-offenders should terminate. The potential for a large influx of new referrals into treatment facilities necessitates that all Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse facilities be involved in the screening and treatment of DWI offenders. The centers should differentiate service on the basis of sound evaluation, referral, and clinical treatment. For example, treatment for chemically impaired drivers, as for other clients, should enable them to confront their level of use and abuse. Five appendices provide statewide DWI arrest statistics, the 1982 revisions in DWI laws, criminal justice/substance treatment referral and reporting forms, personal information form/alcohol stages index, and authorization and contract for DWI/cj substance abuse program.
