The introductory chapter explains the philosophy underlying the forensic examination of paper and ink and compares modern approaches to paper and ink examination with traditional methodology. Chapters related to ink analysis discuss the history of the development of various types of writing inks, their manufacture, writing instruments, printing inks, typewriter ribbon inks, and erasable inks. Among the topics considered in a discussion of the forensic examination of inks are the evolution of the ink analysis program of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms; physical and chemical examinations; the thin layer chromatographic examination; and spectrophotometry. The comparison of typewriter carbon and ink impressions is also described.
