The module discusses some of the characteristics of human behavior in several areas relevant to the problems that probationers bring to their probation officers. The areas studied include value systems, family systems, and working behaviors. Symptoms of dysfunction in these areas are reflected in many difficult social problems with which probation officers deal each day. The major symptoms studied are emotional instability, alcohol, drugs, sexual maladjustment, financial mismanagement, and poor health. A chart shows factors that mutually influence each other in the development of the individual. To use the proposed case classification system effectively, it is necessary to engage the probationer in discussion in order to give him/her an opportunity to identify, discuss, and assess his/her own needs. After problem areas and needs are identified, the probationer and the probation officer determine the manner in which these needs will be addressed. Helpful community resources should be located and recommended. Thirty-one footnotes and forms used in probationer needs assessment are provided.
