Crime trends in the Indian State of Andhra Pradesh are examined for 1956-1975, with special reference to the causal analysis of professional crime in the city of Vijawada.
Abstract
Crime statistics are presented for Vijawada, with attention to murder, dacoity and robbery, housebreaking, and cattle theft. The total crime rate reported for the State of Andhra Pradesh is far less than that reported for the country as a whole for any given year studied; most of the crime committed in the State is committed in Vijawada. Such demographic variables as population density, workforce, scheduled castes, and scheduled tribes are considered, and only population density is found to be a significant correlate of total crime in Andhra Pradesh. The socioeconomic background of the criminals is addressed, including age, caste, religion, education, occupation, marital status, and number of children. Among 150 criminals studied, 135 were married; one-third had no formal education; 124 were Hindus; 11 Muslims; and 15 Christians. Almost all the caste-group criminals confessed to their addiction to gambling, drinking, prostitution, and smoking. Types of professional criminals in Vijawada are explored, with a focus on housebreakers, shoplifters, pickpockets, and thieves. Five case studies of different types of criminals are included. The need for correctional administration is cited, and it is suggested that alternative occupations be provided for the professional criminals of Vijawada. Thirteen illustrations and a 45-item bibliography are included.
