Part I contains national data, including charts and a brief narrative. In summary, cases filed for the period increased for the third consecutive year. The 9.8 percent increase in filings exceeded the 6.6 percent increase in terminations to produce an increase of 11.3 percent in the pending caseload. The district courts disposed of cases for 43,329 defendants, convicting 35,591, a 10.4 percent increase over the previous year. Approximately 83 percent were by guilty pleas. Of all defendants, 17.9 percent were not convicted: 15.2 percent were dismissed, 0.6 percent were acquitted after nonjury trial, and 2.1 percent were acquitted after jury trial. Charts describe the type of dispositions for criminal defendants during the 12-month period and summarize defendants disposed of by type of disposition from 1970 through 1983. Part II contains historical tables covering the 1960-83 period for selected offenses, including index crimes, violations of immigration laws, income tax fraud, auto theft, and violations of liquor, marijuana, narcotic drug, weapons and firearms, gambling, and antitrust laws. Part III presents data for each district court on the type of sentence imposed in major offense categories for the 1983 reporting period, along with information on the age, prior record, and sex of convicted defendants.
