This slide/tape presentation, designed as an educational tool or as an aid in implementing rural community crime prevention programs, examines rural crime problems, the fundamental principles of crime prevention, why they are effective, and what collective actions can be taken to implement them.
Abstract
Advice on planning the slide/tape program includes a list of planning steps, guidelines for selecting a resource person, a sample letter confirming participation by a resource person, a sample news release advertising the slide program, suggestions for equipment use, and a checklist of steps to ensure a successful program. Suggestions for conducting the program cover program coordination, a statement to introduce the program, and recommendations for discussion. The presentation begins with an overview of the types of crimes prevalent in rural areas: the theft of farm equipment, machinery, commodities, and household valuables; vandalism; and con games. After briefly noting the factors essential to a crime -- target, opportunity, and desire -- community crime prevention programs are described, including citizen education and awareness programs, Crime Stoppers and other reward programs, citizen CB patrols or monitors, the encouragement of citizen crime reporting, and Neighborhood Watch.
