Prepared by the Management Development for Correctional Administrators Program at the University of Southern California, this syllabus summarizes the objectives and content of a 1-week course in stimulating organizations' learning and institutionalizing change and provides the required reading materials.
Abstract
The course focuses on environmental factors that affect an organization's life and growth and management's ability to create change. An introductory session reorients participants into the training program by reviewing concepts taught in a previous program. The next session identifies sociopolitical and economic indicators for the correctional administrator and intervention strategies that can improve organizational processes. Participants then analyze their own projects in the context of these concepts. Other sessions cover methods of dealing with conflict, the impact of interest groups on correctional administrators, and power arrangements in the organizational setting. One day is devoted to the legal environment, with attention to the impact of judicial activism in corrections and computer technology. The final session addresses future trends and ways that major social or technological changes could affect corrections. All readings are supplied.
