In addition to focusing on the security manager's roles of planning, organizing, staffing, and directing, the articles in this collection also examine legal considerations, technical requirements, and upper-management and employee attitudes about security issues.
Abstract
Because effective security is preventive, effective security managers foresee problems, identify solutions, gain acceptance, and oversee implementation. Program planning involves establishing credibility and earning the confidence of management, developing a security policy, and assessing vulnerabilities and risks. Articles review annual facility inspections, security program efficiency ratings, budgets, and effective loss, offense, and incident reporting. Personnel management articles review employee motivation, the team concept of management, improving job satisfaction, and security directors' roles as leaders, trainers, and counselors. Other articles about nonsecurity personnel cover promoting security awareness and loss prevention, checking employee references, and conducting exit interviews as a loss prevention technique. Articles on outside resources examine selecting, using, and evaluating consultants. Legal concerns are reviewed in discussions of the legal basis of authority and of civil and criminal liability. Coping with legal restraints during labor disputes is also reviewed. An index is provided.
