Community service involves the donation of a number of hours of personal service to community service or repairing damage caused by the offender. Such orders hold the offender responsible for the harm done and provide procedures for the offender to make restitution for that harm while aiding the community. Typical offenses for which community service is ordered include theft, public assistance violations, criminal trespass, receiving stolen property, and resisting arrest. Services are assigned to public or nonprofit private agencies such as libraries, parks, and hospitals. Information on two adult and one juvenile community service program is presented, including offender selection for the program, the number of hours of work assigned and time allowed for completion, offender transportation, insurance coverage, policies for dealing with uncooperative offenders and those committing a new serious offense on community service, program financing, and program administration.
