Curricula are presented for teaching preschool, elementary, and secondary students about the prevention of the sexual abuse of children and youth.
Abstract
A sourcebook designed to facilitate communication with children about sexual exploitation focuses on the following topics: definitions of sexual assault terms, differences in touch, reactions and reporting sources, offenders, trusting senses, general prevention related to strangers, helping friends, and portrait of victims. A curriculum that introduces the concept of private zones, assertiveness, and community report systems is discussed, as is a curriculum designed to help junior and high school students develop skills in the communication of their feelings, attitudes, and expectations related to sexuality and the exploitative or abusive use of sex. Other curricula include activities and materials for sexual abuse prevention for preschool, elementary, and secondary school-age children and preschool, elementary, and secondary school-age children and materials for teaching handicapped students about sexual exploitation. Suggested guidelines for evaluating curricula on sexual abuse of children and youth are provided and focus on three areas: (1) definition and information, (2) skills, and (3) style or presentation. Sources that loan curricula, including the Northwest Resource Center for Children, Youth and Families, and the Washington Coalition of Sexual Assault Programs, are listed.
