The author's experiences and observations during his 400 days as the coordinator of the Literacy Volunteers' Tutorial Program at Attica Correctional Facility are presented in diary form.
Abstract
Various confrontations, such as one between the administration and the guards because the facility's first woman counselor went to eat lunch in the officers' mess hall, are examined. Also addressed are special events at the facility, such as the arrival of the NBC camera crew in the officer's mess hall. Numerous questions (e.g., what rewards an inmate? How is he encouraged to repeat acceptable social behavior? What makes an inmate withdraw to 'the box'
