The materials primarily address interpersonal, nonviolent conflict and a cooperative, collaborative, and problemsolving approach to it. Trainer preparation, learning objectives, activities (exercises, role-plays, checklists), and handouts are provided for each module. The first module, 'Thinking about Conflict,' is designed to orient participants to the content and approaches they will be using by helping them assess personal reactions, strengths, and weaknesses; explore the dynamics of conflict; and develop a trusting group atmosphere. The second module examines the broad range of human feelings, identifies the physical symptoms of stress and physiological responses to stress, and presents a relaxation exercise. Module three explores responses to conflict, styles of conflict and their uses in varying situations, and behaviors that escalate or deescalate conflict. In module four, the nature of power and its sources are examined as is the impact of societal roles on power dynamics in conflict. Also examined are strategies that provide safety in dangerous conflict and practices that stimulate self-empowerment. The relationship between social and personal change, the role of personal beliefs in personal change, dealing with anger, and a strategy to dispute irrational thoughts are presented in the fifth module. Module six examines the components of effective communication, differentiates between content-oriented and relationship-focused communication, presents a constructive feedback model, and discusses active listening. Conflict mediation and factors affecting it are considered in module seven; and the potential impact of the training program at the community and national levels is discussed in the final module. A bibliography is provided.
