This document contains abstracts and text of papers produced by a research project that investigated methods to measure associations between two variables observed over a fixed set of spatial locations and their application to criminal justice.
Abstract
The report begins with the original project proposal, which generalized an index proposed by Tjostheim (1978) based on the sums of distances between those spatial locations that contain identical rank values on two different variables. Problem areas addressed by the research are described, as is the research agenda. Part I summarizes papers that explicitly address the problems of spatial association between variables and the related topic of matching origin and destination in criminal mobility. Areas considered include tests of randomness, nonparametric tests for directional data, order-dependent measures of correspondence for comparing proximity matrixes and structures, and statistical applications of linear assignment. Part II presents summaries of papers dealing with methodologies related to spatial association or to technical details. Specific topics include unclassed matrix shading and optimal ordering in hierarchical cluster analysis, a method for determining the adequacy of two or more models in terms of how well they represent a given data set, rater agreement for complex assessments, statistical inference in geography, and evaluating the simularity of geographic flows. The appendixes contain the texts of papers published by the authors or presented at professional meetings. Charts, references, and formulas are supplied.
