The prison's functions are listed, including its primary function of holding adult male unsentenced prisoners committed within the Greater London, Surrey, and Hertfordshire areas and getting them to the right court on the right date with the right documentation. Satisfactory progress is reported in implementing the 15 recommendations made by the Deputy Director of the Prison Service, and attention is given staff training, staff administration, and working conditions and facilities. Inmates' accommodations are reviewed, and the need for additional sanitary facilities is emphasized. In addition, improvements in reception procedures are recommended to ensure the preservation of inmate dignity and avoid undue delay. Employment and education facilities are addressed, and the introduction of a physical education program is recommended. Also discussed are discipline and control, security, hospital and medical services, probation and aftercare services, and catering and meal services. The prison's efficiency in performing its primary function is praised, and recommendations for improvements in other areas are provided. These include the following: (1) the Governor should arrange for fire drills and evacuation exercises; (2) the Prison Department should provide sufficient cold room storage so that cooked and uncooked meats may be kept separate; and (3) the Prison Department should improve staff facilities. The appendix presents a summary of recommendations.
