This project developed materials for the prevention and treatment of child sexual abuse, including a training manual, classroom curricula, a slide/type presentation, and research studies.
Abstract
The four segments of the 30-hour training course cover an introduction to child abuse and neglect, the problem of child sexual abuse, responses to child sexual abuse, and prevention of child sexual abuse. The five grade levels targeted by the classroom curricula are kindergarten through grade 2 (12-day curriculum), grades 3-4 (12 days), grades 5-6 (5 days or 5 weeks), junior high (5 days), and high school (5 days). Each level has units on assertiveness, and support systems. Background information for the teacher and student lessons and activities are provided. The slide/tape presentation focuses on the identification of the sexually abused child and reporting responsibilities and processes. The research studies include (1) a survey of 405 persons regarding retrospective sexual abuse reports, (2) reading of school records to determine possible effects of sexual abuse upon the victim, and (3) an evaluation of training effects on participants as measured by their attitudes toward their ability to assist the sexually abused child, the juvenile victim, the offender, and the nonoffending spouse. An annotated 33-item bibliography; 85 references; survey instruments; and the presentation and the training manual, are included. Tabular data, a glossary, and a table of contents are also supplied.
