A Survey of 19,933 households ia a Northwest United States county found that 20% of the households which recently experienced serious crimes had not reported these to the police.
Abstract
Reporting and non-reporting households were compared, using indicators of social integration-marginality-socioeconomic status, presence of social support networks, stability of residence and employment, and personal difficulties. Reporting crimes (both against property and against the person) was positively related to a composite index of integration only the reporting of crimes against property crimes had characteristics such as low income, problems with anxiety and depression, unfriendly neighbors, plans to move their residence, and lack of available friends and relatives.
