This manual for a 30-hour training program for school personnel, other professionals, parents, and interested persons covers detecting, treating, and preventing child sexual abuse.
Abstract
The program is designed to be taught by a team of therapists, law enforcement and social services representatives, medical personnel, volunteer victims, offenders, and nonoffending spouses. The curriculum has four segments: introduction to child abuse and neglect, the problem of child sexual abuse, responding to child sexual abuse, and prevention. It is designed to provide trainees knowledge of the various forms of child abuse and neglect, reporting laws, dynamics of child abuse, behavioral indicators of sexual abuse, interviewing skills, the court system and treatment processes, community referral resources, and curricula for preventing child sexual abuse. While the materials are presented in seven 4 1/2-hour sessions, the units can be rearranged into various time configurations. The training manual contains the following leader materials: The unit's rationale and objectives, group activities, special suggestions for the trainer, and lecture content. Handouts for trainees are provided, as are preprogram and postprogram tests, which measure attitudes as well as knowledge. A schedule, glossary, references, and an annotated bibliography are supplied.
