Data show time served in Delaware jails (inmates sentenced for less than 1 year) with a focus on 1980-82.
Abstract
Of the 2,216 inmates released in those years, .10 percent were paroled; 0.1 percent were released to other authorities; 24.1 percent were released because their maximum sentence had expired; 46.2 percent were released because they had served their maximum sentence, less good time; and 19.1 percent were released by court order. Additionally, 10.4 percent won meritorious release. Slightly more than 75 percent of the jail inmates received some form of time reduction; overwhelmingly, this was a good time earned reduction. More than 50 percent of the jail population had an imposed sentence of 30 days or less, and the average sentence length was 71 days. The average time actually served was 47 days. Three figures and five tables are included.
