Police training must involve the development of three skills: handling the law and police procedure, handling people, and finding facts.
Abstract
A common view is that the role of a police officer is solely that of a law enforcement agent. However, the police officer on the street really manages people. The police officer must plan, organize, direct, and control individuals and the course of events as part of a managerial responsibility. Police skills training fosters within police recruits an awareness of self, others, and community, as well as a range of interpersonal, interviewing, and information processing skills to help young police officers be more effective and efficient. The course includes sessions in a language laboratory to help develop awareness of potential communication difficulties with a variety of people. The sessions also help recruits to develop comprehension, recall, and listening skills using video and video feedback. Eleven references are listed.
