General principles of fundraising are discussed, such as treating contributors and grantors with courtesy and gratitude. The need for victim service program directors and staff to know their program, to be aware of its budget and funding needs, and to schedule efforts well in advance is emphasized. Common problems among victim service providers are identified, with the most prevalent being their belief that they are unable to raise funds. Various suggestions are presented, and fundraisers are urged to learn from others' fundraising successes and failures, to examine reference books on fundraising, and to keep a file on good advertising. Recommendations for the design of the fundraising plan are provided, and the need for the program to convey a good image is noted. Advertising should inform the public about the services provided by the program in the community. Additionally, the program must have a good business image, which can be achieved by having a good budget and financial statement, a logical staffing plan, supporting documentation, and an annual and a long-term plan; and by conforming to local, State, and national laws. The ingredients in a successful fundraising request are identified. Figures and 38 references are included.
