Abstract
Port Authority data for 1981 consists of 126 variables pertaining to 864 incidents of cargo theft, as reported in the files of the Crime Analysis Unit of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Cases for analysis were preliminarily selected from the files of the Port Authority if they occurred at either John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, Newark International Airport, Port Elizabeth, Port Newark, or the New York Marine Terminal in Brooklyn. Incidents were selected for sample inclusion if the primary crime code was any of the eight designated codes that involve the theft, robbery, or burglary of air, truck, or marine cargo. Data on the method used to commit the crime, type of property stolen, and characteristics of the perpetrators were collected, where available. A Statisical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) program was used to prepare the data.
