NCJ Number
96102
Date Published
1978
Length
80 pages
Annotation
After describing a 1972 survey of local jails by the U.S. Bureau of the Census, this document discusses the survey sampling and data collection and then presents the table of contents for variables, a description of the codebook, and the codebook itself.
Abstract
The study obtained information on local jail facilities, services, and programs. Specific variables included the number of inmates held, the types of accommodations, the number of different types of staff personnel, the procedures for segregating certain types of inmates, and the nature of jail programs and services. The study included all locally operated jails listed in the National Jail Census of 1970 and authorized to confine inmates for 48 hours or more. The appendixes contain definitions and a discussion of data deficiencies.
