Annotation
The Survey of Jail Inmates, 1972, was conducted in the summer of 1972 as a followup to the National Jail Census, 1970. In addition to gathering more detailed information about jails, the survey also collected demographic data, incarceration history, and legal status data from a sample of 4,238 inmates in 354 local jails.
Abstract
The study contains income and employment data, reason for incarceration, bail status, dates of admission and sentencing, length and type of sentence, and previous incarceration history. The survey consisted of personal interviews with the inmates. The document includes a variable description list and an explanation of the entries contained in the codebook.
