This codebook presents the questions and coding used and some of the results from a 1969 survey concerning the processing of arrested persons prior to trial.
Abstract
Data came from 156 judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, and bail project directors who responded from 280 questionnaires mailed to 80 cities. The research objectives included developing a model to determine the optimum percentage of defendants to hold prior to trial, constructing a model for pretrial release decisions, comparing cities with and without bail reform projects, comparing cities with 10-percent and 100-percent bond requirements, and determining the causes and effects of variations across cities in the percentage of defendants held in jail prior to trial.
