The variable description list and the codebook are provided for the 1976 survey of inmates in five California prisons to obtain self-reports on crimes committed prior to incarceration.
Abstract
An introduction describes the study and discusses data collection, sampling, weighting, information processing, file structure, and codebook information. The self-report method was used to obtain extensive information about respondents' prior criminal records, juvenile criminality, drug use, and economic and social-psychological characteristics that might be associated with criminal behavior. One file contains the survey data and a second contains frequency counts for all the variables. There are 624 respondents with 378 variables per respondent. The data come in two formats: a card-image file and an OSIRIS data set. Notes on various aspects of the study methodology are appended.
