This codebook presents the questionnaire, variables, and coding information for the data set resulting from the survey of chiefs of large police departments, conducted from 1973 through 1976 as part of the National Manpower Survey.
Abstract
An introduction describes the study and discusses information processing and codebook information. The study, which involved 11 separate surveys, assessed the adequacy of current criminal justice and law enforcement training programs, projected future training needs, and established need priorities for future training and assistance programs to be funded by the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration. The survey was conducted in all general purpose police departments serving jurisdictions with a 1970 population of 17,000 or more. The file includes 1,207 cases, which is 78.8 percent of all chiefs of large departments. The codebook describes the variables and the data format. The appendix contains the code values for the 'major obstacle' survey question and the list of code numbers for the States.
