This codebook presents the questionnaire, variables, and coding information for the data set resulting from the survey of chiefs of small police departments, conducted in 1974 through 1976 as part of the National Manpower Survey.
Abstract
The introduction describes the study and discusses data standards as well as codebook information. The study, which included 11 separate surveys, assessed the adequacy of current criminal justice and law enforcement training programs, projected future training needs, and established need priorities for future training and assistance programs to be funded by the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration. The survey was conducted in a 20 percent sample of all general purpose police departments serving jurisdictions with a 1970 population less than 17,000. The file includes 1,515 cases, which is 59.7 percent of the sample of chiefs of small police departments. The codebook describes the variables and the data format. The appendix presents code values for the 'major obstacle' survey question and the list of code values for the States.
