This codebook presents the questionnaire, variables, and coding information for the data set resulting from the survey of chiefs of small sheriff's departments, conducted from 1974 through 1976 as part of the National Manpower Survey.
Abstract
The introduction describes the study and discusses data standards as well as codebook information. The study, which included 11 separate surveys, assessed the adequacy of current criminal justice and law enforcement training programs, projected future training needs, and established need priorities for future training and assistance programs to be funded by the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration. The survey was stratified by department size, and the file contains 276 cases, which is 55.1 percent of the sample of chiefs of small sheriff's departments. The appendix presents code values for the 'major' obstacle survey question and the list of code values for the States.
