This codebook presents the questionnaire, variables, and coding information for the data set resulting from the survey of officials of juvenile correctional institutions conducted from 1974 through 1976 as part of the National Manpower Survey.
Abstract
The introduction describes the study and discusses data standards as well as codebook information. The overall study, which included 11 separate surveys, assessed the adequacy of current criminal justice and law enforcement training programs, projected future training needs, and established need priorities for future training and assistance programs to be funded by the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration. The survey was addressed to the administrators of publicly operated detention centers, shelters, reception or diagnostic centers, training schools, ranches, forestry camps, farms, or group homes whose resident populations were at least 50 percent juveniles. Juvenile detention centers that were an integral part of adult jails were excluded. The file includes 585 cases, which is 73.2 percent of the total. The codebook describes the variables and the data format. The appendix presents the code values for the 'major obstacle' survey question and the list of code values for the States.
