An introduction explains learning goals and the training schedule. An overview defines adolescent abuse and neglect, discusses its extent, and outlines characteristics. An explanation of the nature of normal adolescent growth and development looks at early and late adolescence. Causes of adolescent abuse and neglect are examined in terms of abuse beginning in childhood and continuing into the teenage years, physical punishment beginning in childhood changing qualitatively to physical abuse in adolescence, abuse emerging in adolescence, neglectful parents, and sexual abuse. The detection of adolescent problems is highlighted, with emphasis on sexual problems, problems with hostility, substance abuse, juvenile delinquency, and school-related problems. A final chapter on working with abused and neglected adolescents and their families concludes the manual. Planning intervention (behaviors that impede fact-finding, team assessment approach, treatment settings, worker's biases, and guidelines for the worker) and intervention methods (crisis counseling, individual intervention, working with teenagers in groups, working with families, and use of community resources) are discussed.
