A child sexual abuse prevention program developed for use in fourth, fifth, and sixth grade classrooms is presented.
Abstract
Program objectives are listed: to sensitize educators and students to the problem of child sexual abuse, to provide children with the knowledge and skills needed to help prevent abuse, and to encourage children to act on their wish to say 'no' if someone touches them in a way that disturbs them. Facts and laws about child sexual abuse are provided, and the importance of obtaining school and parental support for the program is emphasized. A letter requesting parental permission for student participation is included, and a teacher's guide to the program materials is supplied. The teachers are urged to discuss children's rights to provide a logical and meaningful context for the program. Teachers are instructed to elicit from the class recognition of such basic rights as the right to one's own thoughts and feelings, the right to say 'yes' or 'no' to how one is being treated, and the right to express feelings and opinions. A presenter's guide offers suggestions for holding a discussion before and after the films, 'Some Secrets Should Be Told,' and 'No More Secrets.' Also provided is a student questionnaire which solicits students' reactions to the program and their recommendations for improvement. Individuals to whom the sexually abused child can go for help in the school and in the county are noted. Additionally, sources for treatment, consultation, and protection are listed. Thirteen references are provided.
