The psychological state and background variables of first offenders was compared with that of women who had served previous terms in prison. The psychological states of depression, anxiety and social/emotional adjustment of the two groups were strikingly similar. First offenders were more likely to be married, to have more children, and less likely to have been abused either physically or sexually. The implications of these differences were discussed.
