This volume examines child abuse and neglect in the context of time and culture, the family system, human development, impact, and formal response systems.
Abstract
The prevention, intervention, and treatment roles of professionals, paraprofessionals, volunteers, friends, neighbors, relatives, and the family are discussed as well. Four types of child abuse are explained: physical child abuse, child neglect, emotional neglect and abuse, and child sexual abuse. Formal responses from identification to assessment and planning are examined, and the courts' role is considered. Intervention services ranging from in-home supervision to foster care are described. Treatment issues, including the definitions of treatment, the need to use individual strengths as the basis of psychological treatment, and the range of treatment modalities available are presented. The importance of shared responsibility for efforts at prevention, intervention, and treatment is emphasized. Chapter reference lists, an index, data tables, and appendixes presenting interviewing guidelines and related information are supplied.
