Just under 30 percent of the respondents were in industrial security, 16 percent in retail, 13 percent in health care, and 14 percent in education and other institutional seuurity. Security equipment was seen as a solution to many security problems, including employee theft, burglary, shoplifting, fire, and accidents. Industrial espionage, executive protection, and computer crime were not as widely mentioned. About 20 percent of the respondents indicated that more closed-circuit television monitoring and advances in monitoring and detection systems that would incorporate more sensitive and comprehensive detectors are needed. Improved alarm systems, cost-effective equipment at lower prices, and more radio communications, alternatives in computer and microcomputer security, and options in access controls are also needed. Inhouse alarm system monitoring will be taking the place of alarm companies and central station monitoring. Access controls are becoming increasingly important. While applications of closed-circuit television and access controls are projected to increase during the next 3 years, outdoor perimeter protection will show the biggest growth.
