Data on adult recidivism in Washington State from 1960 through 1982 reveal an overall recidivism rate of 36.2 percent and lower rates for person offenders as opposed to property offenders.
Abstract
Recidivists are defined as offenders returned to prison within 5 years after release. The components of the overall rate range from a high of 40.7 percent for property offenders to a low of 18.5 percent for persons convicted of second degree murder. Approximately 43.1 percent of all recividists return within their first year following release, and nearly three-fourths reappear in prison within 2 years. These patterns appear fairly consistent throughout the various offense categories. Property offenders and robbers generally have the greatest risk for recommitment, whereas persons convicted of murder and manslaughter have the least. Detailed tables are supplied.
