This group of seven articles on special police units entrusted with enforcing regulations in a specific industry covers enforcement of laws governing gaming, lotteries, mass transit police units, railroad policing, and natural resources police.
Abstract
The first article details the organization and authority of the Nevada Gaming Control Board's Enforcement Division whose duties include investigating applicants for gaming licenses, detecting cheatinq against casinos, and liaisoning with other law enforcement agencies and casinos. The director of Maryland's State lottery discusses issues that police administrators should consider when wagering legislation is proposed. Two approaches to policing public transportation are described: the independent Metro Transit Police in Washington, D.C., who police Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia and the special transit security unit within the Detroit Police Department known as the Bluebirds. Another perspective on transportation security is provided by a description of the Hillsborough County Public Transportation Commission (Florida), which is responsible for certifying all operators and enforcing the rules and regulations that govern them. One article surveys the field of railroad policing, addressing the uniformed patrol force, special investigative units, cargo security, and Amtrak's drug interdiction program. Finally, the training, organization, and duties of Maryland's Natural Resource Police are outlined. This unit is charged with enforcing conservation laws and ensuring the safety of persons who use State lands and waterways.
