This article provides an examination of recent policy developments and the critical history relating to observation and assessment centres.
Abstract
It seeks to highlight some of the practical issues and difficulties that might be caused by a general move towards decarceration and deinstitutionalization in this field (from residential to community-based assessments) and to place these matters in the general contex to theoretical debates in penology and the sociology of punishment.
