Written for health professionals, this manual lists the indicators of child abuse and neglect, types of injuries which result from child abuse, the steps involved in interviewing abusive or neglectful parents, and South Dakota laws regarding child abuse and neglect.
Abstract
Characteristics of abusive or neglectful parents and abused or neglected children are listed, and the signs that an expectant or new parent may become abusive are given. A list of medical indicators of child abuse and neglect includes skin trauma, internal and facial injuries, skeletal injuries, signs of sexual abuse, and signs of neglect. Guidelines on interviewing parents cover the principles involved before and during the interview, the questioning procedures, and the termination of the interview. Procedures for reporting and the phone numbers and addresses to which reports should be given are also listed.
