This manual defines sexual assault, provides statistics on sexual assaults in Denver, and discusses ways to prevent the crime from occurring.
Abstract
The manual dispels some of the common myths about sexual assault. It explains where and when sexual assault occurs, particularly in Denver, and identifies some of the options available to avoid entirely or to reduce the seriousness of the assault. It emphasizes that women can be responsible for their own lives and for what happens to their bodies. Also addressed is the emotional impact of sexual assault on women, which may lead many women to not report the incident to the police. Women are urged to report attacks to the police in order to protect themselves and other women from future attacks. Methods of active resistance are examined, including yelling and running, fighting, talking with the attacker, making demands of the attacker, and cooperating with the attacker. Elements of good training for active physical resistance are identified, and steps that a victims should take immediately after the assault are addressed. Possible effects of the assault on a husband or male partner are enumerated. Five references and 11 illustrations are included. See NCJ-96671 for related report.
