This videotape focuses on rape statistics, rape victim trauma, rapist profiles and tactics, and rape prevention, with attention to self-defense techniques.
Abstract
The format segments include rape victims' discussion of their victimization experiences, information on rape and rape prevention provided by a panel of experts from the New Orleans Rape Crisis Service, and instruction in a women's self-defense class. The women who comment on their rape victimization experiences are members of a weekly support group for victims of rape and incest. Each describes the facts of the rape and the psychological aftereffects. The panel of experts comments on the scope of the rape threat and the probability of avoidance: 1 out of 3 women will be confronted with a rape threat in her lifetime, while 3 out of 4 of those so confronted escape without harm. The panel emphasizes that a woman's chance of escaping a rape threat unharmed is increased by physical resistance. The discussion of rapist profiles indicates that only a small percentage of rapists are sadistic killers. Most are not killers and are likely to be surprised and thwarted by aggressive resistance. The segment on instruction in self-defense identifies the attacker's vulnerable body areas and describes techniques that can be used to attack these areas.
