The future of forensic science will be better assured by positive action to maintain a mutually respectful relationship with the court of law and crime investigators. In determining whether an offense has been committed, the extent of the demand for forensic science involvement will depend on current legislation, public behavior, and police efforts in supporting it. Forensic scientists should also play an active role in the formulation of laws based on scientifically determined data. The forensic scientist must work to maintain an independent role while working with the legal system. Identifying and highlighting the criteria for accreditation of expert witnesses could be an important factor in this respect. While working with police departments, forensic scientists must be especially careful to maintain their objectivity. Three references
