This book for elementary and junior high school students describes the training of police cadets and follows one cadet at the New York Police Academy through a typical day.
Abstract
At the academy, cadets have their morning call or 'muster' at 8 o'clock. They then listen to instructions from the officer of the day and assemble for inspection. Following the morning call, the cadets participate in physical fitness exercises, including calisthenics and self-defense training. They are also instructed in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid. Cadets also attend academic classes; practice target shooting and engage in 'exertion training,' designed to simulate the exertion of a street chase. Finally, they participate in 'crime-in-progress' training which helps them to act without hesitation. The training is designed to prepare cadets for their demanding careers as police officers. Approximately 40 photographs are included.
