This survey of juvenile detentions in Wisconsins secure detention facilities in 1983 covers jails and detention centers, description of juveniles detained, description of alleged offenses, and length of detentions.
Abstract
Data were obtained from the detention centers, usually from a facility register or log sheet. Findings indicate that there were 6,901 detentions of juveniles in secure facilities; of these, 3,145 were in county jails, 3,713 were in county detention centers, and 43 were in municipal lockups. The number of detentions in jails and lockups has steadily declined since 1978, while the number of detentions in detention centers has risen since 1979. Reasons for the decline in lockup detention are offered. Eleven tables are included.
