This manual presents the data collection instrument and explanations and coding information on the variables used in a survey conducted in 1975 on attorneys in Chicago.
Abstract
The study aimed to describe and analyze the social organization of the legal profession in Chicago. Aspects considered were the organization of lawyers' work, the social stratification within the bar association, prestige within the profession, lawyers' personal values, career patterns and mobility, networks of association, and the elites within the profession. Data were collected using a stratified sample with simple random selection of elements wihin strata. Interviews were completed on 777 attorneys, and the data set contains about 870 variables. A memorandum explaining the sampling procedures is attached.
