The book emphasizes the school's followup role after The book emphasizes the school's followup role after abuse is reported and examines the literature and laws on child abuse. The history, magnitude, and definition of child abuse and neglect are reviewed, as are the characteristics and needs of abusers and the criteria for school reporting policies and procedures. A discussion of the roles of school administrators, nurses, social workers, psychologists, counselors, and teachers after child abuse has been identified and reported emphasizes how to deal with the affected children. Cooperative efforts by school staff, especially health workers, to prevent child abuse are emphasized. It is recommended that abuse and neglect prevention training be conducted within a community education framework or within the regular elementary and secondary programs. Education programs for teenage parents are suggested to lessen the likelihood of abuse. Extensive appended materials include the text of Public Law 93-247, a sample school policy covering reporting and responding, a flow chart illustrating interaction between school and child protective services, a sample continuous followup form for schools, an example of a school's response, and sources of information, including the addresses of the regional offices of the National Center on Child Abuse and Neglect. An annotated list of 42 films and filmstrips, a list of free or inexpensive pamphlets, and 114 references are appended.
